Holiday Pies

By: Anna Jones, R.D.

As the holidays approach consider the many tasty and healthy seasonal foods available such as baked sweet potatoes, home-made applesauce, or warm nutty oatmeal. Also notice the many not quite so healthy special treats available to us during the holidays such as holiday pies.

Nutrient rich foods including sweet potatoes, applesauce, or oatmeal have more nutrients and less solid fat or added sugar. One medium baked sweet potato has 165 calories and 0 calories from solid fats or added sugars. One ½ cup serving of unsweetened applesauce has 51 calories and 0 calories from solid fats or added sugars. One ½ cup serving of oatmeal has 71 calories and 0 calories from solid fats or added sugars.

Apple PieFoods high in empty calories such as pumpkin pie, apple pie, or pecan pie contain more calories from solid fats and added sugars. Equal size slices of each pie, 1/8 of 9 inch pie, can be compared. One slice of pumpkin pie contains 374 total calories, 113 empty calories from solid fats and 62 empty calories from added sugars. One slice of pecan pie contains 464 total calories, 97 empty calories from solid fats and 120 empty calories from added sugars. One slice of apple pie contains 363 total calories, 110 empty calories from solid fats and 111 empty calories from added sugars.

If a treat is something you really, really, really love there is always a way to eat a small portion within a healthy diet. However, if you would be just as satisfied with a sweet potato as pumpkin pie, or with homemade applesauce as apple pie, or nutty oatmeal as pecan pie, most of the time than that would be a way to better fuel your physical body.

Our primary purpose for eating (holidays or not!) is to fuel and nourish our physical bodies. Learning to balance our primary purpose of eating (fueling our bodies!) with the many joys of holidays treats is a lesson we get to practice each holiday season. How and what you choose to eat during the holidays matters and is an opportunity to better take care of yourself!
