June 2011 Heartland Spa & Fitness Resort e-Newsletter
Summer at the Heartland Spa & Fitness Resort

I'm so stressed out! How many times have you heard friends or family members say these very words? Unfortunately, they are probably telling you the truth. But a vacation, even a short two or three-day getaway, like those we offer at The Heartland, can make all the difference in the world in terms of reducing stress and improving overall health. Studies have shown that men who take regular vacations are 32% less likely to develop heart disease. And, women who take a vacation more than once every two to five years are eight times less likely to suffer a heart attack than those who vacation only once every six years. For these reasons, and so many more, I encourage you to make time to get away. Your health is too important. You deserve it!

I look forward to welcoming you home to The Heartland.

Yours in health,
Harold Lebovic, President

The Sad Truth about Childhood Obesity

What Adults Can Do to Set an Example
Childhood obesity is an overwhelming epidemic. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) the level of childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years, and the prevalence of obesity among children aged 6 to 11 years of age has increased from 6.5% in 1980 to 19.6% in 2008. Studies have revealed that 40% of obese children and 70% of obese adolescents become obese adults. obesityBy the time an obese child turns 6 years old, his/her chance of becoming an obese adult is over 50%!

The reasons for these alarming statistics aren't surprising. "Quite simply, our children are eating way too many calories and they aren't getting enough physical activity," says Kim Onnen, MS, ACSM Health & Fitness Specialist for the Heartland Spa, who is also the mother of two with one on the way. "As adults, we must set an example for healthy living," she adds. "Not only do we ourselves need to exercise, but we need to promote exercise within our families as a way of life," she says. "We also need to focus on better eating habits and teach our children how to make healthier decisions when it comes to snacks and meals," she adds. "I firmly believe that change is possible, and that childhood obesity can become a thing of the past."

In our next newsletter, we will discuss specific steps you can take to create a healthier, more active family.

Upcoming Demos and Discussions
Chef Barb

If you're planning a visit within the next few months, you'll be treated to Chef Barb's new demonstration called Summer Salads & Dressings. We offered this presentation last year at this time, and our guests raved about what they learned…some of them even sent us photos of their at-home creations! Also in the months ahead, our resident nutritionist Ashley Thacker, will be hosting a new discussion called Organic, Natural, and Other Environmentally Friendly Food Labels DECODED! This presentation should be quite interesting as guests learn the differences between organic, natural and those food items that are labeled as "green" or eco-friendly. If you'd like to know when these sessions will be offered, please call our office at 815-683-2182.
